Task-oriented guides for every feature — from first measurement to final PDF export.
From zero to a full tile estimate in under a minute.
Type your room dimensions directly, or switch to Advanced Mode for non-rectangular shapes like L-shaped, U-shaped, and T-shaped rooms.
Set tile width, height, and grout spacing. Pick straight, brick, herringbone, or diagonal layout. Adjust rotation and offset to fine-tune placement.
See exact tile counts, cut list, and waste estimate. Export a client-ready PDF, share via URL, or save your project for later.
Step-by-step answers to the most common tasks.
Practical advice to get the most out of every calculation.
Even with perfect calculations, tiles break during transport and cutting. Keep spares for future repairs too.
Use the offset controls to shift the pattern so edge tiles are at least half-width. Thin cuts are fragile and look bad.
A 12×24 tile laid lengthwise vs. widthwise can dramatically change the cut count. Always check both orientations.
Subtract areas for vanities, islands, and built-ins. In Advanced Mode you can add cutouts to get a precise net area.
Something not working? Check these common issues.
Fix: Check that your room dimensions are in feet and tile dimensions are in inches. A common mistake is entering tile size in centimeters instead of inches, or room size in inches instead of feet.
Fix: Make sure grout width is in millimeters (typical range: 1.5-6mm). If the pattern looks squished, verify tile width and height aren't swapped. Use "Flip Dimensions" to correct orientation.
Fix: Double-check that each wall length and angle is correct. For L-shaped rooms, ensure the bump-out dimensions match your actual measurements. You can always edit individual wall values.
Fix: Ensure you've completed a calculation first — the export button only works after results are generated. If the layout preview is visible, the PDF should work.
Fix: The share URL encodes your exact state at the time of sharing. If you made changes after sharing, generate a new URL. Very long URLs may get truncated by some messaging apps — try email instead.
Quick answers to the questions we hear most.
Room dimensions are in feet, tile dimensions are in inches, and grout width is in millimeters. The calculator handles all unit conversions automatically.
Yes! Switch to Advanced Mode to define L-shaped, U-shaped, and T-shaped rooms wall-by-wall. The calculator builds the shape live as you enter measurements.
Yes. Switch to Advanced Mode to build L-shaped, U-shaped, T-shaped rooms, or any custom polygon by adding walls at any angle.
Waste factor adds a percentage buffer on top of the exact tile count. Straight patterns typically need 5-10%, diagonal 15-20%, and herringbone 20-25%. You can set any custom percentage.
Yes. Use "Save Layout" to save via email, or use "Share" to generate a URL that encodes your entire project state. Bookmark it or send it to a colleague.
The PDF includes project dimensions, tile specifications, a visual layout diagram, exact tile counts (full + cut), waste estimate, and a material summary — ready for client proposals or job-site reference.
The calculator accounts for grout lines, pattern-specific cuts, and edge tiles that manual area-division methods miss. The calculator count is more accurate because it simulates actual tile placement.
Only if you choose to save it. Shareable URLs encode your layout in the URL itself — no server storage. The email-save feature stores layouts in our database linked to your email.
